Having trained in both dental acupuncture and relaxation therapy, Kathryn is able to offer additional treatments that can help you feel comfortable in the dental chair.

Regarded as a safe treatment with no significant risks or side effects, acupuncture may aid in the management of facial pain, limited opening due to muscle spasm and headaches related to muscle tension.

Kathryn has also found it to be incredibly effective for those who suffer with a sensitive gag reflex enabling many to undergo treatment who have previously found it intolerable. Acupuncture treatment can also be highly worthwhile for those who experience dental anxiety and can lessen feelings of stress during treatment.

Acupuncture is regarded as a safe treatment with no significant risks or side effects.

Acupuncture is often used alongside dental treatment rather than at a separate appointment and involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points, generally within the head and neck area although several relaxation points can be found on the hands and feet.  Sometimes the positions of the needles may seem strange but there are specific patterns for many treatments. The needles are activated by hand throughout the session and for many this is virtually painless.

Modern research has shown that acupuncture can be highly effective and that the results are not simply due to the placebo effect. The needles stimulate a nerve response and modify the pain response as well as stimulating the release of natural painkillers.  They also work by improving blood flow to the muscles leading to improved function and reduced pain. As well as this acupuncture has a generally beneficial effect on health with many patients reporting they feel better in general and sleep better after treatment.

Conditions that may be helped by acupuncture are:

  • TMJ (jaw joint) problems

  • Facial pain

  • Muscle spasm in the head and neck

  • Stress headaches

  • Gagging

  • Dental anxiety

This treatment may not be appropriate for every patient and it is conditional on a satisfactory assessment being carried out.  Many cosmetic treatments such as teeth whitening and veneers, composite bonding etc require that you are dentally fit prior to embarking on treatment and this may mean that other treatments need to be carried out first.

All options that are appropriate to your needs and requirements will be discussed with you in order to help you to make an informed decision about what will be in your best interest.
