What is involved when having a tooth removed?

Most teeth are extracted within the dental practice under local anaesthetic.  This means that your mouth will be numbed to pain although you may feel some pressure and movement. Kathryn will talk you through this and if you are feeling particularly anxious or nervous about the treatment will discuss options that may help you to feel more relaxed.

In some circumstances, such as a more complex extraction, it may be in your best interests to be referred for treatment with sedation or general anaesthetic.

What happens on the day?

  • Once you are ready and comfortable Kathryn will inject a local anaesthetic into the area around the tooth.

  • The anaesthesia will be allowed to work fully, Kathryn will ask you questions and test the area to check that the numbing agent is effective.

  • Once numb, Kathryn will carefully loosen the tooth so that it can be removed safely.

  • In some cases, it may be best to place a stitch to help the empty socket heal, although this is not always necessary.

  • Pressure will be applied to the site and checked to make sure that preliminary bleeding has stopped.

  • Kathryn will go through post-treatment care advice and provide you with an aftercare pack to take home.
